Choosing a Guide

Read Time: 3 minutes

The famous Chinese proverb “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” by Lao Tzu really embodies the adoption adventure.

Once we decided that adoption was our best option, we jumped in full force trying to figure out what that single step must be. It was clear that we needed to find a guide for our journey. To do so, we needed to research what the laws, regulations, and policies were for each State. Living in New York, we found that some things were far easier than in other states while others far more difficult. We put together a spreadsheet outlining 4 key elements that really impacted our decision, and looked at each State and how they address it. We looked at things like revocation period, solicitation rights, out of state adoption rights, and residency requirements. We also spoke with many different people trying to figure out who they used, what experiences they had, and who would be the best fit for us. We ended up deciding on a law firm in Indiana. At that time, the laws allowed for out of state adoption with no residency requirement, a minimal revocation period, and solicitation allowed by both the prospective parents and agencies. However, during the few weeks of discussing our options with the legal team in Indiana, the laws changed and we were no longer able to utilize their services without moving to Indiana.

New York

Our journey took a U-turn ending us back in New York looking for someone to work with. We spoke to some people, asked around for recommendations, and called a few organizations and lawyers in New York. We quickly narrowed our list of potential organizations by those that were open and willing to speak with us and those whose ideals matched ours. We attended some conference calls and orientations to help us get a better feel for the organizations. We ended up with our final pick, the organization we are currently working with, namely Adoption STAR.

Adoption STAR

While not on the top 5 list, it was clear to us that Adoption STAR was the right fit. From the first email, the staff at Adoption STAR have been incredibly helpful, supportive, and understanding. We have asked so many questions, sometimes more than once, emailed and called at all hours of the day/night, and even asked for help when we couldn’t make something work. They have been an invaluable resource for us.

Shaun, the intake manager is phenomenal. Even though he is swamped with work and a million other things to do, he has taken the time to speak with us both over the phone and in person making us feel like we are the most important thing going on. He has always made us feel comfortable and like we are the center of his attention, without giving any sign that we are taking up his time or he is too busy to talk. Shaun has been an integral part of why we chose Adoption STAR as our guide on this journey. (Click here to go to their page to learn more).

We are looking forward to continuing our journey with Adoption STAR and will keep you updated as things progress!

All the best,
